Transport of Positrons in the Interstellar Medium

چکیده

This work investigates some aspects of the transport of low-energy e (Ek . 1 MeV) in the interstellar medium (ISM). We consider resonance interactions with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves above the resonance threshold. Below the threshold, collisions take over and deflect e in their motion parallel to magnetic-field lines. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we model the propagation and energy losses of e in the different phases of the ISM until they annihilate. We suggest that e produced in the disk by an old population of stars (SNIa, LMXB), with initial kinetic energies below 1 MeV, and propagating in the spiral magnetic field of the disk, can probably not penetrate the Galactic bulge.

The Galactic Positron Annihilation Radiation & the Propagation of Positrons in the Interstellar Medium

The ratio of the luminosity of 511 keV positron annihilation radiation, measured by INTEGRAL, from the Galactic positron bulge (< 1.5 kpc) compared to that of the disk is ∼ 2. This ratio is roughly a factor of 5 larger than that expected simply from the bulge/disk ratio of ∼0.3 of the Galactic supernovae, which are thought to be the principal source of the annihilating positrons through the dec...

The lives and deaths of positrons in the interstellar medium

We reexamine in detail the various processes undergone by positrons in the interstellar medium (ISM) from their birth to their annihilation using the most recent results of positron interaction cross sections with atomic and molecular hydrogen, as well as helium. The positrons’ lives are divided into two phases: the “in-flight” phase (between ≈ 1 MeV and tens of eV) and the thermal phase. The f...

Calculation of Positron Distribution in the Presence of a Uniform Magnetic Field for the Improvement of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Using GEANT4 Toolkit

Introduction Range and diffusion of positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals are important parameters for image resolution in positron emission tomography (PET). In this study, GEANT4 toolkit was applied to study positron diffusion in soft tissues with and without a magnetic field for six commonly used isotopes in PET imaging including 11C, 13N, 15O, 18F, 68Ga, and 82Rb. Materials and Methods GEA...

Inverse Compton Origin of the Hard X-ray and Soft Gamma-ray Emission from the Galactic Ridge

A recent re-determination of the non-thermal component of the hard X-ray to soft γ-ray emission from the Galactic ridge, using the SPI instrument on the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) Observatory, is shown to be well reproduced as inverse-Compton emission from the interstellar medium. Both cosmic-ray primary electrons and secondary electrons and positrons contribute ...

Light Dark Matter

The SPI spectrometer aboard of the INTEGRAL satellite has released a map of the ee annihilation emission line of unprecedented quality, showing that most of the photons arise from a region coinciding with the stellar bulge of the Milky Way. The impressive intensity (≃ 10 photon cm s) and morphology (round and wide) of the emission is begging an explanation. Different classes of astrophysical ob...
